BLG: First german logistics company with scientifically recognized climate protection targets

SBTi verifies climate protection targets of BLG LOGISTICS

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has recognized the targets of BLG LOGISTICS to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in absolute terms. That makes BLG LOGISTICS the first German logistics service provider and the first company in Bremen with scientifically recognized climate protection targets.

The SBTi is a collaboration between the environment organization CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

„We're very aware of our responsibility to the environment and I'm proud that we've set ourselves these ambitious climate protection targets,“ said Frank Dreeke, CEO of BLG LOGISTICS.

The scientifically recognized target is to reduce emissions within the company in absolute terms by 30 percent, and outside the company by 15 percent – in both cases by 2030. BLG already offers its customers climate-neutral services. Under the name Mission Climate, the seaport and logistics service provider brings together all its activities designed to achieve its overriding goal of becoming a climate-neutral company by 2030. Furthermore, BLG LOGISTICS invests in carefully selected and certified climate protection projects to offset unavoidable emissions.

At the 21st World Climate Conference (COP 21) in 2015, the international community resolved the legally binding Paris Agreement. Its goal is to limit global warming to significantly below 2°C, and if possible to a maximum of 1.5°C. This can only be achieved with the contribution of businesses.

When revising their climate strategies, more and more companies are asking how they can measure an appropriate contribution of their company to limiting global warming. The SBTi provides a framework for this. It examines how far greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced to support the goals of the Paris Agreement. Currently, 503 companies across the globe have targets confirmed by the SBTi. Of these companies, 26 are based in Germany.
