A logistical door-to-door project is setting new standards: In the Neustadt port of Bremen, the BLG team recently loaded a state-of-the-art continuous wood press for the US wood-based materials manufacturer Roseburg Forest Products Co. KG and, together with long-standing partners, brought it safely and efficiently on its way across the Atlantic.
Siempelkamp's experienced logistics team took over the entire logistics management for the international transportation of the complex plant components. As project forwarder, UTC Overseas organized the sea freight as well as the handling and transport to the Roseburg construction site in the USA. The seaworthy packaging of the sensitive components was ensured by PTS Logistics GmbH. The central operation took place in in the port of Bremen under the direction of BLG LOGISTICS. The subsequent overseas transportation was handled by BBC Chartering GmbH, which shipped the entire cargo across the Atlantic Ocean in one single charter with its breakbulk vessel BBC Aquamarine.
With a total volume of over 10,000 freight tons of break-bulk cargo and 195 containers, this was one of the largest single shipments ever carried out in Neustädter Hafen. Most important: the perfect interaction of all parties involved - from packaging to handling, shipping and transportation to the construction site in Oregon.
Neustädter Hafen as a logistical hub
As Europe's largest breakbulk terminal for conventional cargo, the infrastructure of Neustädter Hafen offers ideal conditions for project shipments of this size. Short distances, well-coordinated processes and an efficient network of specialized service providers make it the ideal hub for international project cargo.
Thanks to the direct connection between the warehouse and the quay, even large and sensitive components can be loaded directly from the warehouse gate onto the ocean-going vessel without time-consuming intermediate storage - protected by specially developed, seaworthy packaging solutions. In addition to generous storage capacity and high-performance handling equipment, it is above all the experienced team that makes the crucial difference: long-standing customer relationships and well-established processes ensure a level of handling quality that is highly valued by many renowned companies in the German machinery and plant engineering sector. The high level of expertise and flexibility of all the partners involved were decisive also in this undertaking for a precise and timely implementation.
Teamwork as the key to success
The project is a prime example of the importance of long-lasting partnerships in international plant construction and its logistics. Months before the shipment, all parties involved worked closely together to develop a customized logistics concept. The result: one single charter that not only saved valuable time, but also around one million US dollars in logistics costs compared to several partial deliveries.
This project in particular clearly demonstrates how precise planning, reliable partners and coordinated processes lead to a smooth process, even with highly complex logistical requirements. The exceptional density of bulk cargo on just one single vessel made this shipment a special event - both for those involved in the project and as a showcase for Bremen as a business location.
