With a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony, BLG LOGISTICS and its partners celebrated the start of construction for a large-scale roofing of parking spaces with photovoltaic modules at the Kelheim AutoTerminal. The solar ports will generate around 23 megawatts of renewable electricity in future.
On Wednesday (July 9), Axel Krichel, Member of the Board of Management & Chief Operating Officer (COO) BLG LOGISTICS, together with the Chairman of the Kelheim District Ports Association, District Administrator Martin Neumeyer, the Managing Director of the Association, the mayors of Kelheim and Saal and the project developer SOLEA, launched the construction of a sustainable roof for 10,000 parking spaces at the BLG AutoTerminal in Kelheim.
Around 53,000 photovoltaic modules with an output of over 23 megawatts peak will be installed on the “Hopfenfeld” site. The project is being realized together with SOLEA, an experienced specialist for large-scale PV systems. The site has been using PV electricity since 2019.
Axel Krichel emphasizes the strategic importance of the project: "Kelheim is much more than just a location for us: it is a central hub in our network of sustainable logistics solutions - trimodally connected, highly automated and customer-oriented. BLG LOGISTICS is one of the largest employers in Kelheim. This investment is a positive signal for the location."

AutoTerminal Kelheim is one of the most important inland ports for vehicle handling. On a total area of 550,000 square meters, around 300 employees process vehicles that are delivered by ship, rail and truck from Hungary, Slovakia, the Adriatic ports and southern Germany. The technical equipment on site enables washing and repair processes as well as market-specific configurations.
Site manager Görgen Brockbalz is convinced: "This flagship project bridges the gap between sustainability and profitability. The solar ports not only generate green electricity, they also create around 10,000 covered parking spaces that protect our customers' high-quality products from the weather."
With around 4.4 million vehicles transported last year, BLG LOGISTICS is one of the leading automotive logistics providers in Europe. We handle and store vehicles, provide technical services and handle distribution by truck, rail and inland waterway. BLG operates two seaport and six inland terminals throughout Germany.
