The new mobile harbor crane at the BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven was ceremoniously christened today by Kristina Vogt, Bremen's Senator for Economy, Ports, and Transformation, with the name "Frieda." Over 150 name suggestions submitted by readers of the Nordsee-Zeitung highlight the close connection between the people of Bremerhaven and the port, as well as BLG.

The new mobile harbor crane, a Liebherr LHM 550 model, elevates the terminal's handling capacity to a new level. With a lifting capacity of up to 154 tons, a reach of 54 meters, and a weight of 440 tons, the crane is perfectly suited for the demands of modern heavy cargo operations. It also represents an ecological advancement: equipped with ten powered axles, it can be flexibly used on-site and operates with shore power, contributing to low-emission port logistics.

The crane was manufactured at the Liebherr plant in Rostock and arrived in Bremerhaven via waterway—a logistical feat befitting its status as a maritime heavyweight.

A symbol of progress and responsibility
The investment of approximately five million euros is a clear commitment by BLG LOGISTICS to the Bremerhaven location. After years of preparation and planning, the christening marks a visible milestone.
Kristina Vogt emphasized the significance of the investment during the christening ceremony:"With this new crane, Bremerhaven can showcase what the port is capable of: more weight, more reach, more flexibility. BLG's investment strengthens the location, particularly in heavy cargo handling, where specific technical and logistical requirements are needed. Such modern equipment makes a difference when it comes to attracting new cargo and positioning Bremerhaven for the future—both economically and ecologically."

Axel Krichel, Member of the Executive Board & Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the BLG Group, added: "Frieda takes us to a new level in heavy cargo handling and is a clear commitment to the development of this location. As Bremerhaven's largest employer, we are acutely aware of our responsibilities—economically, ecologically, and infrastructurally. The fact that we chose the name together with the citizens of the region underscores our close connection to the city."

Naming contest with strong participation
The name was chosen through a public competition organized by BLG in collaboration with the Nordsee-Zeitung. Readers were invited to submit creative suggestions for the new crane. Over 150 entries were received, and a jury consisting of BLG LOGISTICS employees and Nordsee-Zeitung staff selected the winner.
The name "Frieda" symbolizes strength, future-readiness, and the close bond between the port and the city of Bremerhaven. Additionally, it impresses with its technically inspired acronym: "Frieda" stands for Functional Shunting Crane for Industrial Unloading and Dynamic Applications. This creative suggestion was submitted by Roberto Larze, whose idea stood out for its thoughtful derivation and memorable, appealing form.

First heavy-lift operation successfully completed
The new mobile harbor crane completed its first practical operation on July 4, handling a true heavyweight: a 118-ton transformer delivered by barge from Poland and loaded at the terminal for transport to the USA. Previously, such a load would have required a second crane, but the new LHM 550 managed the task single-handedly. This successful maiden lift impressively demonstrates the capabilities of the new technology and marks the beginning of a new era at the location.
